Nome consolidato sulla scena roots europea, l’olandese Ad Vanderveen vanta una discografia notevole (una ventina le pubblicazioni a partire dalla fine degli anni Novanta) e una prolificità che non si smentisce neppure con questo Candle to You, disco che segue di solo un anno il già apprezzato Release. È capitato qualche volta di incrociare la sua carriera anche sulle pagine del nostro web magazine, anche se da qualche tempo ne avevamo perso le tracce. Lo ritroviamo sempre fedele al suo stile, quello che lo ha fatto accostare all’Americana e al folk rock d’autore, un suono che gli è valso anche numerose collaborazioni con colleghi d’oltreoceano come John Gorka (un duetto era presente nell’album Denver Nevada del 2018), Eliza Gilkyson, lo scomparso David Olney, senza dimenticare che persino Van Morrison lo aveva scelto come artista di apertura nel suo tour olandese di qualche anno fa. 

Insomma, Vanderveen ha basi solide, una scrittura musicale morbida ed elettro-acustica che richiama la West Coast, il country rock dei 70s e tutta quella generazione di songwriter che in quegli anni ha raccontato i sogni, gli amori, le illusioni di una generazione. Non a caso Candle to You, album e canzone omonima, sono visti dallo stesso Vanderveen come un omaggio esplicito ai suoi due principali eroi musicali, Bob Dylan e Neil Young. Del primo ci sono tracce meno evidenti, ma resta un’impronta, magari quella più tradizionalista di Nashville Skyline e New Morning, mentre direi senza tema di smentite che il secondo rappresenti la vera stella polare del nostro Ad Vanderveen, fin quasi alla maniacale riproduzione di certe dinamiche sonore. Basta ascoltareFollowing the Wind, Last Venture, Miss that World, la dolcezza degli impasti creati da armonica, pedal steel (Jan Erik Hoeve) e chitarra acustica (ma anche mandola, strumento che spesso Ad utilizza per la composizione) per accorgersi dell’amore e del rispetto verso il loner canadese. 

D’altronde, saranno le stesse origini di Vanderveen – in parte di famiglia canadese, anche se nato a Hilversum, Paesi Bassi – a far crescere questo affetto, ma è fuori discussione che Candle to Yousi muova su quella linea ideale che va da Harvest a Prairie Wind passando per Comes a Time, per intenderci il Neil Young più intimo e dai toni elegiaci. È senza dubbio il limite di un disco che comunque risulta suonato e prodotto con classe, senza mai eccedere (le più elettriche sono Over Time e il finale che più “younghiano” non si può di Air Guitar, ode ai propri sogni di rock’n’roll) e con quella voglia di scrivere di amore e sentimenti, sempre tra il personale e l’universale, che distingue il lavoro del “buon songwriter”. Qualche volta più folkeggiante e solitario (pregevole Window in the Rain, delicato l’avvio di Do What You Love), altre spalleggiato dalla band, che prevede anche il morbido intervento degli archi di Neil James Morrison (viola e violino), Ad Vanderveen non si allontana mai dalla sua missione.

Candle to you

Het is een traditie. Elk nieuw jaar een nieuwe cd van Ad Vanderveen. Ik ben niet zo van die opgelegde gewoontes, maar als elke herhalingsritueel zo is als deze, dan mogen we niet mopperen. En klagen bij een cd van wellicht de meest interessante Nederlandse singer-songwriter doen we zeker niet.

Candle to you verschilt van zijn voorganger Release dat meer intimistisch was, een gevolg van de Covidpandemie. Zijn nieuwe cd gaat gepaard met een breder geluidsspectrum. Uiteraard is Kersten de Ligny weer van de partij met haar versmeltende harmony vocals. Jan Erik Hoeve, de laatste aanwinst in zijn combo, vult aan met ingehouden pedalsteel klanken. Verrassende comeback is er met violist en oude makker Neil James Morrison die hier en daar precies dat vleugje orkestratie meegeeft dat het betreffende nummer nodig heeft. In het instrumentarium van Vanderveen zelf is de mandola een nieuwe aanwinst, al was dat in live optredens al vaker te horen. Window in the rain  is geheel opgebouwd rond dit instrument, met een fraaie aanvulling van de jankende pedalsteel in dit introspectieve nummer. Exit inside is een pracht voorbeeld van een akoestisch rocknummer. Het gedreven ritme verhult mogelijk de heerlijke filosofische gedachten die Vanderveen in de tekst verwerkte.

Zijn pennenvruchten zijn immer poëtisch, weerspiegelend, introspectief, eerlijk en open. En….de vertrouwde splijtende soli op elektrisch gitaar klinken gelukkig weer (o.a. Over time, met gastvocalen door Philip Kroonenberg). Slotnummer Air Guitar -op humoristische wijze een serieuze beschrijving van de gevolgen van een lockdown- rockt als vanouds en happy hoor ik hier weer de uit zijn dak gaande e-gitarist van bijvoorbeeld Water under the bridge terug. Ik houd wel van de rockende Vanderveen, maar het gekke is, dat als ik hem in steviger verpakking hoor, ik verlang naar zijn subtiele akoestische ballads. En omgekeerd! Candle to you voldoet aan beiden.

De cd is zeer afwisselend met steviger elektrisch werk en ingetogen pareltjes. In Last venture hoor ik sporen van Mr. Tambourine man, inclusief de mondharmonica en dat heerlijke orgeltje (Simon Moore) dat Dylans Blonde on blonde periode zo kenmerkte. De titelsong is een ode aan zijn muzikale helden, Dylan en Young. Het is muzikaal meer een type Dylan nummer geworden dan passend bij de Canadees, die ook akoestische juweeltjes pende, maar toch met een wat ander ritmestructuur. Vanderveen bedankt zijn helden voor het doorgeven van de (muzikale) vlam en wij mogen dankbaar zijn dat die in zulke goede handen terecht is gekomen. Wederom een zeer sterke schijf van Ad Vanderveen.

The new album, Candle To You, is the riveting, expansive new album by the contemporary folk artist, Ad Vanderveen. What is so unique about this record is that most of the album was written on the mandola and features instruments like the pedal steel, violin and viola, bass, drums/percussion, and harmony vocals. Because it was written on the mandola, it uniquely looks towards past timeliness and stillness.

On the opening track, “Do What You Love,” Vanderveen is both a storyteller and an advice-giver. He sings: “you need a miracle to make it on through… love what you find or you find what you love… do what you love and you’ll be taken care of…” It’s such a beautiful folk song with beautiful, gentle instrumentals and vocals.

The Amsterdam-born Vanderveen was born overseas, but his classic voice echoes the influences he borrowed from the folk/Americana greats like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, and more. This can especially be heard in the second track, “Following In The Wind.” The close resemblance in his voice to Young’s is incredible and the lyricism in this song is real.

“Over Time” is just a terrific storytelling song where he sings about going to visit an old friend, which put him on old memory “spin” and looking back “overtime” is just different looking back over your life. It’s such an interesting song. I really enjoy the tempo and energy of this track.

“All The Way Thing” talks about humility and love being an “all the way thing.” I love the lyricism in this song from Vanderveen. It’s a very honest and humble song.

On “Miss That World,” he gets a little more country with the gentle acoustic guitar playing in the background, and violins quietly being played beautifully. There was also a bluesy harmonica solo that took place after the first verse.

If Vanderveen sounded anything like the folk greats earlier, he definitely took influence from them on the album’s last track on “Air Guitar.” You can just hear Neil Young or Bob Dylan’s influence on him.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by some of the songs on this record. It had some really decent songs on it that I enjoyed. I definitely recommend giving it a listen if you’re into Americana/folk music and into artists like Bob Dylan, Neil Young, or Woody Guthrie.

Contemporary folk artist, Ad Vanderveen, delivers new record, Candle To You, out now

Tien verse songs van Ad Vanderveen trekken voorbij in bijna drie kwartier. Akoestische gitaar, viool, piano, mondharmonica, rust en contemplatie. Maar af en toe ook stevig van den elektrieke, want kalm is nog niet bedaard bij deze meneer die in Nederland leeft en geboren werd in Hilversum, in 1956. Hij heeft Canadese roots en maakt al decennia lang platen van een hoog niveau, zowel muzikaal als tekstueel. De laatste jaren worden de albums steeds beter en het lijkt wel alsof de frequentie toeneemt.

Ad Vanderveen doet boodschappen en hij heeft haast. In ‘Do What You Love’ draagt hij zijn missie, licht en vrijheid, over aan de jongeren. Ook deze, 31e!, plaat is weer subliem. ‘Following the Wind’ is epiek met een mooie gitaarsolo. Neil Young en Bob Dylan zijn voorzaten, dat belijdt Vanderveen openlijk in songs als ‘Exit Inside’ en ‘Last Venture’. ‘Miss That World’ is ook een hoogtepunt, met een veelzeggende en briljante tekst. De titelsong is wel wat aan de softe kant, maar ja, dat heb je met kaarslicht.

Voor deze plaat schreef Vanderveen de meeste nummers op de mandola, een volwassen versie van de mandoline, die wat lager is getoonzet. Ook nu weer wordt Ad begeleid door vaste waarden als zangeres Kersten de Ligny, Jan Erik Hoeve op pedal steel, Neil James Morrison op violen, Pete Fisher op bas, Michael Kay, slagwerk en Simon Moore op keyboards.

Het volume aan albums dat Ad Vanderveen heeft uitgebracht is zonder meer indrukwekkend te noemen. Hij gaat onvermoeid (dit is uiteraard een veronderstelling), maar zeer zeker, gedreven door. Nagenoeg iedere keer ben ik opnieuw verbaasd over het hoge niveau wat Ad tentoonspreidt. Laat ik kort zijn, hij heeft al verschillende mooie platen gemaakt en onnoemlijk veel songs geschreven, en iedere keer word ik opnieuw aangenaam verrast. Op iemand als Neil Young ben ik al jaren uitgekeken, terwijl dat bij Ad allerminst het geval is. Er is wel eens een vergelijking gemaakt, inclusief door mijzelf, tussen Ad en Neil, en die is er, ook opnieuw hoorbaar op Candle to You, en Ad blijft mij onverminderd te overtuigen, of het nu semi-akoestische is of een stukje steviger. Ad draait overuren!

Hij beperkt zich in Window in the Rain tot alledaagse reflecties. Geen wereldse thema’s maar simpelweg muziek van iemand die plezier beleeft aan musiceren en songs schrijven, waarmee ik overigens niet zeg dat de pandemie ongestoord aan hem voorbijgaat. De wereld verandert als een malle, en wat kun je dan soms beter doen dan plezier beleven aan Air Guitar. En dat doet Ad als geen ander! Following the Wind is, wat mij betreft, niets anders dan doorgaan op je ingebouwde voelsprieten.

Candle to You is een waanzinnig sterk album. Veelzijdig en geïnspireerd. Jaren geleden heb ik Ad live gezien (en gehoord) tijdens een optreden met Iain Matthews. Ik meen in Wijk bij Duurstede. Ik was toen vooral gecharmeerd van Iain’s zang, weet ik nog. Misschien vergis ik mij, maar in mijn geheugen speelde Ad meer een ondersteunende rol. De Ad anno nu is een gelauwerd artiest, eentje waar we terdege trots op mogen zijn.

Hij is trouw gebleven aan zijn muziek, en vindt nog steeds ruimte binnen de marges die hem gegeven zijn om fris en sprankelend te blijven. Buitengewoon knap. Niet alleen knap geschreven songs, ook qua uitvoering mankeert niets. Niet dat al zijn albums mij helder voor de geest, anders had ik geclaimd dat Candle to You één van zijn mooiste albums is, tot nu. Wanneer je van dit genre houdt, dan vermoed ik dat ik niet de enige ben die gaat genieten van deze plaat. Ik ga er weer ns voor zitten, en pak nadrukkelijk de teksten erbij.

Singer-songwriter Ad Vanderveen heeft het ‘m weer geflikt! Na het uitstekende album ‘Release’(2021) volgt nu ‘Candle To You’, een album met 10 nieuwe songs, die, zoals we gewend zijn van Vanderveen, de herinnering oproepen aan het beste werk van zijn grote inspirators Neil Young en Bob Dylan.

Opvallend aan ‘Candle To You’ is dat het geluid enigszins nieuw is. Dat heeft te maken met het feit dat Vanderveen de songs schreef op de mandola, de oudere zus van de mandoline. Omdat hij voor het eerst gebruik maakte van dat voor hem nieuwe instrument, leidde dat tot nieuwe ideeën en harmonieën.

De samenstelling van de begeleidingsband met pedal steel (oud-Personnel maatje Jan Erik Hoeve) , viool/viola (Neil James Morrison), keyboards (Simon Moore), bas (Pete Fisher) en drums (Michael Kay) zorgt voor een fraaie country sound.

‘Candle To You’ is daarmee weer een internationaal klinkend country album geworden met juweeltjes van songs als het prachtige Following The Wind, het met zang van een ander ex-Personnel maatje Philip Kroonenberg sterke Over Time, All The Way Thing met Jan Erik Hoeve op de pedal steel in de hoofdrol en het fraai gezongen Exit Inside.

‘Candle To You’ sluit af met een typische Ad Vanderveen-song, het schitterende , dat qua opbouw en geluid herinneringen oproept aan Neil Young’s Cowgirl In The Sand van het misschien wel ultieme Young-album Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.

Kortom, met ‘Candle To You’ bewijst Ad Vanderveen eens te meer een singer-songwriter van internationale klasse te zijn.

The tool which an artist chooses to wield to bring to life their creation greatly affects the art that they birth. The sound, feel, history, context, and otherworldly magic associated with a particular instrument will do much to shape the tunes that a songwriter writes. For the string-smiths out there a certain style or brand of guitar will react differently with the musician and furthermore, if they want to escape the typical patterns, they will reach for more eclectic instruments to get the inspiration out into the world.

Folk troubadour Ad Vanderveen sings songs of the human condition with a wistful lilt and a perceptive voice. Culled from the preeminent folk influences of the 20th century, his tracks are heartfelt, vulnerable, and have an unfettered sense of sincerity and real-world exposition. For this latest record, Vanderveen wrote most of the songs on the mandola, a bigger sibling of the mandolin. It still bears the same doubled-string twang of its smaller counterpart but tuned a fifth of an octave lower. The mandolin easily lends a folksy/Americana vibe to any track and the mandola does the same but can occupy a sonic space closer to a standard guitar. Beginning the songs with this instrument at their core instantly evokes that warm, timeless character that the genre strives to achieve. 

Candle To You has a theme throughout of shining a light in dark places to find your way through. Vanderveen offers words of comfort and pearls of wisdom for the listener to be nourished by. The opener ‘Do What You Love’ unfolds as a message to a child trying to find their way in the world. An urging to chase after what you’re passionate about. The track has a certain Cat Stevens thematic vibe. The song evokes a slow dance on the hardwood kitchen floor with a homely harmonica solo as an extra sweetener. The title track offers up an adoring tribute to a love with a lullaby-like warmth. The dreamy bend of a tasteful pedal steel meandering throughout.

The song ‘Last Venture’ is spiritually descended from Bob Dylan’s original version of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’. The pairing of wistful harmonica and pulsing strummed acoustic scores his wandering verses. His cadence mimics the Minnesota minstrel with a lyrical turnaround that comes back to hit you like the swift wag of a tail. His mandola serves the role of banjo on ‘Window in the Rain’, a sparse track that embodies the feeling of those quiet days, shut in from the deluge. A soft, pliable violin accompanies Vanderveen on this piece of pure Americana. ‘Miss That World’ calmly sways, propelled by a brushed drum set and accented by the pedal steel emulating the howl of coyotes off in the distance. A country-tinged look back at the whirlwind of a past romance.

Vanderveen again proves his folk chops by writing a welcoming album that brings you to that home on the range. On this effort, he seems to have coalesced more of a signature sound relying less on the tropes of his forebears while still honouring the lineage.

Ad Vanderveen releases excellent ‘Candle To you’ 

Amsterdam-based contemporary folk/Americana singer-songwriter Ad Vanderveen recently released a new album, Candle to You, reflecting the sense and sound of both Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

Talking about the album, Vanderveen says, “The title track can be considered a humble dedication to both men mentioned above, as well as some other heroes who came before. A tribute while still alive if you will. As a child of the sixties, growing up in the second line of that revolutionary generation, I see myself as a carrier of the same flame. I’m grateful to see those greats in the frontline still ahead out there today.”

He goes on, adding, “While some songs are typically acoustic guitar-based, a lot of this album was written on the mandola – the mandolin’s older sister. Exploring this instrument led to new horizons and different harmonic settings that seem to emphasize the spaciousness and fluidity in my music.”

Candle to You comes on the heels of his internationally acclaimed 2021 album, Release.
Appearing on the album are Vanderveen (vocals, guitars, mandola, harmonica), Kersten de Ligny (harmony vocals), Jan Erik Hoeve (pedal steel), Neil James Morrison (violin, viola), Pete Fisher (bass, percussion), Michael Kay (drums, percussion), Simon Moore (keyboards), and Philip Kroonenberg (guest vocals).

Encompassing 10-tracks, entry points on the album include “Following the Wind,” vaguely reminiscent of Neil Young because of Vanderveen’s high-pitched vocals. The flow of the song is deliciously low-slung, accented by drawling guitar textures.

“Over Time” features luscious rasping vocals timbres, riding folk-rock-lite harmonics. The drums on this track are stellar, fitting and enhancing the tune. The title track rolls out on a low-slung, plucking guitar backed by the low cry of the pedal steel.

The country savors of “All the Way Thing” imbue the song with melancholic flavors as Vanderveen’s slightly scratchy tones infuse the lyrics with wistful textures. The twangy radiance of de Ligny’s wonderful voice adds luminous flavors to the tune.

“Miss That World” features a lightly braying harmonica on the intro, giving the song scrumptious tangs. The steel guitar cries on long, creamy filaments of sound as Vanderveen narrates a world he misses. 

The last track, “Air Guitar,” gently roils on quasi-SoCal soft rock leitmotifs. On this track, Vanderveen once again channels sensations of Neil Young, giving the lyrics episodes of half-spoken inflections.

Candle to You is superbly wrought, mirroring the exquisite aromas of Bob Dylan and Neil Young – a monumental work of art.

De Amsterdammer Ad Vanderveen is een muziek artiest van de oude stempel. Opgegroeid met legendarische artiesten zoals Hank Williams, Woodie Guthrie en Bob Dylan. Als ik dit soort namen hoor dan is mijn interesse direct gewekt. Eigenlijk had ik Ad Vanderveen al veel eerder moeten bespreken, want hij heeft in het verleden best aardig wat Americana albums uitgebracht. Om een of andere reden is het altijd langs mij heen gegaan, tot nu, Candle To You.

En wat ben je blij dat ik Candle To You kan recenseren. Wat ik hoor is een echte Americana artiest die met allerlei soorten instrumentatie veel indruk weet te wekken. Opmerkelijk en ongelofelijk dat wij dit soort kaliber artiesten in ons land hebben, maar het is echt waar. Ad Vanderveen maakt zulk goede Americana muziek dat het met gemak kan boksen tegen de Americana van buiten Nederland.

Candle To You is wat dat betreft een hele aangename eerste kennismaking. Je hoort dus een explosie aan diverse instrumentatie gebruik. Een explosie niet in de zin van een bombast of groots geluid, maar vooral verschillende laagjes en diverse instrumenten. Veel instrumenten komen voorbij zoals akoestische gitaren, pedal steels, percussie, mondharmonica en zelfs de mandola – een vroege versie van de mandoline.

Dit alles maakt van Candle To You een hele rijke plaat die vooral veel schijnt door subtiliteit. Nergens wordt er echt uit de bocht gevlogen en Ad Vanderveen behoudt het vooral heel eenvoudig. Dat maakt de plaat heerlijk om naar te luisteren en door die laagjes verveelt het geen moment en houdt het de muziek tien nummers lang erg boeiend.

Candle To You is dus mijn eerste plaat die ik van Ad Vanderveen en het stelt absoluut niet teleur. Een snelle blik op het oeuvre van hem doet blijken dat Ad een bezige man is. De laatste jaren brengt hij altijd wel wat nieuws uit. Overdaad schaadt soms, maar aan Candle To You hoor ik alles behalve inspiratieloze muziek. Het doet uitnodigen om snel meer van zijn werk te verkennen.

Blij verrast dat wij als Nederlanders in Ad Vanderveen een Americana artiest hebben waarbij we van kwaliteit uit kunnen gaan. Dat is nog niet zo snel een vast gegeven en naar mijn mening zijn goede Americana artiesten uit Nederland op één hand te tellen. Om deze recensie af te sluiten wil ik een gedeelte van de tekst van het openingsnummer geven. Ad Vanderveen met Candle To You, wat een prachtig wonderschone plaat.
